Glog- Chicago Cultural Center

http://emilykim.glogster.com/fieldtrip/

One rainy day, we went to the Chicago Cultural Center to interview. As we steped in the place, there saw a lot of people who were taliking to somebody, sitting in the hall and reading the books. Fortunately, we had chance to interview two old ladies. Although they had different point of view about high culture and popular culture, it was great time for us to hear about experience form the seniors. Also, I was so impressed that seniors spend their free time with cultural events.

Technology- Watch

I know the 'watch' doesn't consider modern technology. However, I can't live without knowing time. Although I've got cellphone, laptop, TV, all the gadgets work as a watch many times for me. I usually put my cellphone next to my pillow while I am sleeping to check time when I open my eyes next morning even during the night. Also, the thing I do firstly in the morning is turning on the TV to check time and the temperature. I think this habit comes from two aspects, my job and my childhood.
First, Keeping up with time is very important for teachers. 40minutes are one class time in Korea for elementary school, and we have 10minutes break time between classes. If I miss time, all the subjects that I have to teach during one class time are going to be mess up. Second, my first hometown, where I lived until when I became 20, was small village, so the bus seldom worked like onec an hour. Can you imagine if I miss the bus what is going to happen? Therefore, I used to get up early and go school or other place before the time is done.

Movie- UP

If I had big enough balloons to lift me up to the sky, I would be the happiest woman in the world. However,78-year-old Carl Fredricksen, the main character, looked pretty sad and gloomy during the movie although this movie’s genre is animation, adventure, comedy, drama, and romance. Pete Docter, the director of Up, tried to keep this mood as the story progressed, and seemed to show the meaning of life with an unrealistic story. Keeping the same mood and theme via the movie is very difficult but important. That is why it has gotten 8.4 points out of 10 by 92,609 voters on IMDB, The Internet Movie Database. Also, it won 2 Oscars, Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures and Best Animation Feature Film of the year.
Up is a 3D animation movie. As I watched this, I felt like I could touch their clothes, faces, and balloons even though I only saw the 2D version of the movie. The image of fabric was so amazing, especially. I almost pulled out my hand to touch the screen. Also, the tone of the images and pastel and warm colors soothe the audiences softly. In addition, the well connected music with the plot helped the audiences to sympathize with the story.
When people find their turning points in their lives, many of them struggle to catch the specific moment because they don’t know which is going to be the big moment. Maybe that is one of the reasons why we need movies which have unrealistic stories even if many of them based on our lives. We don’t have enough time to experience everything that we want to. Therefore, we can catch some clues from the movies when we face on our own problems. In this perspective, Up is the best movie to watch because it gives the viewers a chance to look back on their lives.

Music - So What by Pink

"So What? Guess What? I'm having more fun." This is not my word, but from the lyrics. When I heard this, I was kind of depressed but because of her song, I could have a power to fight whatsoever.
This song has cheerful lyrics, heart beating sounds. Also, her husky voice will make you move. Pink is great a singer, performer, and human being. After I watched her significant performance on MTV Awards, 2009, I was obsessed her powerful voice and outstanding singing ability.
The genre of 'So What' is pop rock which is mixed of pop music and rock music utilizing a catchy pop style with light lyrics, typically guitar based songs.
Pink is her nick name. When she, Alecia Beth Moore, starts her career as a singer, pink crossed her mind spontaneously because she was young, some mean boys used to call her 'Pink' to tease her.
Now, she is one of the sucessful singer in the world. She scored 8 Top US hits and won 2 Grammy Awards. Everyone can sing and dance. However, I don't think everyone can sing as hanaing on the spinning string or jumping constantly, but she did. She did even more powerfully and beautifully. Her husky voice makes me emotional and cheerful at the same time. I hope everyone can have chance to listen her music. Then, I am sure that everyone will love her. She is truely irresistible.

Reading - Text Generation Gap : U R 2 Old(JK)

Kids want to have their private life, but parents have laways been concerned about children's well-being. Texting with cellphone brings freedom, doing something without parents knowing, to the kids. Kids, who are obsessed with texting or using cellphone don't want to put cellphone away even at the dinner table. Even though the messages are just about routine, they would text with friends rather than spending family time together.
As a result, some parents tried to study how to text, but their texting still very limited, so it wasn't enough to communicate with their children. In addition, Children keep creating acronyms to hide actual meaning to their parents. This is what I am concerned. If parents can catch up the texting culture, would the gap between parents and their kids be getting smaller? My answer is pretty skeptical.

Cultural Identity

This is my whole picture of the poster. I wanted to show 5parts about America according to my first impression. Some of them are similar with my culture and well accepted for me but some of them are not. I am going to explain 'WHY' compare two cultures.
Above three pictures are good examples to show the similarities and differences about the Wedding culture. In Korea, we have traditional wedding ceremony : wearing HanBok, which is traditional coutume for special occasions, traditionl ritual as shown on the second picture. But it has been changed to western style. When you see the third picture, you might find weird things. Some of them are wearing traditional costume but some of them are not, especially groom and bride. We usually have 2 stages for the wedding ceremony, traditional style and western style. So groom and bride have to change their outfit for second stage, traditional style which is called 'PyeBaek'. But I think the meaning of marriage has been changed a lot in America. It's getting more complicated. There is no rules and forms such as sexual identity, wedding ceremony. But I can say that Korean wedding style is definitely 'Melting pot'. For this short essay, I don't want to attach a lot of different informations so I am going to close here.

Pop Culture

Popular means that is chosen by large group of people who live at the same age in the same region as a preference. However, sometimes, it trancend the limits of time and region like Shakespeare's works. Now, I can be aware of how pop culture influences me. The culture, sorrounded me, makes my point of view. When I think of the meaning of beauty, several beautiful celebrities' face cross in my mind. Same thing happens to me, when I think of "successful life", dream house, huge swimming pool, luxurious car, etc. Therefore, I can say that my point of view was composed by pop culture.
When I was in Korea, I thought that be a friend with different aged person is almost impossible. Korean has many kind of words when people call others depend on age. It makes us hard to be closed with dirrerent aged people. Although I still feel uncomfortable when I saw that grandchildren call their grandparents' name freely, I am getting used to becoming friend without thinking age difference.
